Tesla beat the world to the electric game. They didn’t invent the electric car, they just managed to find a way to make the long suffering alternative fuel vehicle a viable alternative. Since the first Tesla Roadster, Tesla has gone from “this will never work” to “can anyone beat them?” Well, as Tesla gets ready to take on the popular pickup category there are a dozen companies hoping to head Tesla off at the pass. Big names like Ford and Chevrolet join startups like Rivian and Lordstown in the rush for a battery powered workhorse. The future is bright enough for both of those brands that Ford and Chevrolet have invested in them to make sure the long standing brands aren’t left standing when the pickup world goes electric. Even old companies are reimagining themselves as an electric pickup brand, like conspicuous consumption flagship Hummer. There are already victims in the electric pickup wars with Workhorse giving up on their retail vehicle while they focus on wholesale fleet trucks. Or companies like Hercules Alpha, which is either the most Freudian truck company ever or an electric pickup pipe dream that could leave investors holding the bag. There’s even a way to make old things new again by using Bollinger skateboards to build new electric trucks out of old pickup bodies, or a pair of companies that will Tesla up your old Land Rover Discoverys. Let’s take a look at who is lining up to take the electric pickup throne from Tesla and who might have the goods.
