Rivers are full of some of the most terrifying creatures on this planet, from giant anacondas and saltwater crocodiles to actual sharks. Fishermen have caught record-breaking specimens of these mysterious monsters, like a freshwater stingray as big as a car and a 250-pound alligator snapping turtle. These fishermen face razor-sharp teeth like those of the goliath tiger fish– the more-dangerous version of the piranha– and the 6-inch fangs of the hideous vampire fish, also known as the payara.
There are huge rewards for bringing in some of the biggest catches. Catching a big muskellunge, one of the hardest to catch fish in the world, can earn you more than $10,000 in a tournament, while bringing in bull sharks can make a fisherman millions if they’re sold to make a particular delicacy, shark fin soup. But of course a lot of people are in it for the notoriety of being the first person to catch or even discover a giant river monster. The race is one for scientists to finally discover if a giant snake, the 50-foot long Titanoboa, really does still exist. Plus, ridding our rivers of some of these fish might actually be beneficial– like the Goonch catfish that was caught in India after terrorizing a river and taking multiple lives. So, should we stay away from rivers, or are we just beginning to discover how many terrifying creatures lurk beneath? Here are some of the biggest, scariest and most record-breaking river catches in history.
